Best ukulele brands Lanikai ukuleles are probably some of the most popular ukes out there. In general, they are affordable, built well, look nice, and have a great sound. In my research I was especially impressed with the SC Spruce Concert Uke. Maybe it’s my personal taste – I prefer the understated, less glitzy stuff in life that has lasting quality and depth to it. And that is exactly what Lanikai delivers with this uke.
The price range of this ukulele is perfect to make it accessible to beginners but it is also great for an experienced player or songwriter. It has a solid spruce top and a mahogany back and sides. Being concert sized makes it a little more versatile and easy to use for anyone. Lanikai is one of the bestselling and premier brands of ukulele, and their reputation speaks for itself.
Here’s a great video review of the Lanikai SC Concert Sounds:
Let’s look at a list of its features:
What is a concert ukulele? The concert ukulele is right between the soprano and tenor models, which gives it a bit deeper tone and more volume than a soprano but still that characteristic sweetness of the traditional ukulele sound.
Most Concert ukuleles have 14-17 frets, and so this one having 18 gives you just that little edge of extra versatility and sound capability.
the larger size of a concert ukulele really makes for an easier time playing – you don’t quite have to contort your fingers as much to get the right positions and this uke in general is just a comfortable fit.
Chrome Die Cast Tuners & Hardware
die casting produces a very durable part that won’t crack yet is still an affordable option for tuners and ukulele hardware. Chrome finish adds a little pizazz that isn’t flashy.
Limited Lifetime Warranty
Lanikai guarantees their ukuleles against defects in materials and workmanship for your lifetime! The only exception is the tuning hardware, which is guaranteed for a year. This is a great warranty! Just remember to submit your registration card within 30 days, and keep your sales receipt on hand.
Spruce top with mahogany back & sides
Spruce is one of the more common woods for a ukulele. Different types of wood produce different sounds, so getting the right kind of wood is actually more important thank you might think. Spruce has a tight grain and produces a very vibrant and rich sounding tone. Mahogany is not quite as dense and adds a little brightness and depth to the sound. Together they produce a very well-rounded sound – bright without being tinny, and depth without losing that characteristic ukulele sound.
Solid wood top
Many ukuleles are not solid wood – as in, they are built with laminate wood which is essentially the same as a nice plywood. Some of those are okay sounding, but to really get a good deep sound, having the uke built from solid wood is a MUST. This one has 100% solid spruce for the top.
Rosewood fretboard & frets
Rosewood has a particular kind of oil in the wood which helps it “give” just enough to adjust to the way you play, and gives the tone a warm and lush sound.
Maple is an excellent choice for the binding – it’s very dense and resistant to damage.
Aquila makes the best ukulele strings in the industry, hands down. Their strings do take a few plays to “break in” but once broken in they will not continue to stretch out and require frequent re-tuning like many other brands do. I have to say I am surprised that such high quality strings are included for a ukulele you can usually get for around $100 on Amazon, but I’m not complaining!
Natural gloss finish of The Best Ukulele Brand
A gloss finish on a ukulele helps protect the wood from moisture as you play, and also makes it easier to play by decreasing friction on shirtsleeves and whatnot. Not only that, but hey – it looks great!
Instruction Booklet Included
Mary Lou Dempler, a famous ukulele teacher, has written an instruction booklet to get you started if you are a brand-new uke player. Her instructions are easy and will get you on your way to those late night bonfire jam sessions on the beach!
- Sounds much better than you’d expect for $100 uke
- Keeps in tune very well
- Has a very nice, solid look and feel (doesn’t seem cheap)
- Perfect starter ukulele, you won’t need to upgrade
- Sound almost has a harp-like quality
- Great pitch!
- Looks and plays like ukuleles that are hundreds more
- Action could be raised just a tad for better sound and projection
- Some variability in the setup reported, sometimes needs a “setup” in person by a guitar shop to set up the action, file down frets, etc.
- A few reports of the C-string sounding a little muted, may be related to above issue
The SC Spruce retails are different as always, I have found that Amazon has the best price. They generally have very generous discounts though they do change daily .
Here’s some comments from one of the owners:
I was surprised when I got this ukulele, not expecting it to be this nice and it sounds great. I don’t see how the quality could be any better even if I had paid more. I spent all day playing it when I first got it and it has been very enjoyable to use. If the Lanikai Soprano Ukuleles are built like this one I’ll pick one of those up too and give away the cheap one that I have.
It is the best ukulele brands
I do recommend getting the Lanikai LUT-1 Chromatic & Ukulele Tuner if you are buying the uke so you’ll have a perfect match (**Rob’s note – the Lanikai tuner is out of stock but I use and recommend the Intelli IMT500 Clip-on Tuner). This uke came with Aquila strings and from what I have read they are the best ones. All in all I am very pleased with this ukulele, it was well packed and I received it quicker than I thought I would. If you are thinking about a ukulele, spend the extra cash and get one of these or another one from Lanikai, you won’t be kicking yourself later on if you do.
